Sessione 21

Frank e George rimangono in ospedale per più di un mese, a causa delle gravi ferite ricevute. George spende questo tempo studiando i libri rubati nella residenza Carlyle, e impara un rituale per creare creature non-morte, proprio come quelle che ha combattutto nei sotterranei della Ju-Ju House.

Durante la loro convalescenza, fa loro visita Jonah Kensington. L' editore fornisce loro l' ultima lettera ricevuta da Elias, una lettera che era restio a divulgare, dato il contenuto compromettente, ma che ora crede sia doveroso far leggere agli investigatori, alla luce dei pericoli che hanno affrontato per trovare gli assassini di Elias. Quando gli investigatori fanno presente che intendono recarsi a Londra per continuare le loro ricerche, Jonah fornisce loro il contatto di Mickey Mahoney, editore dello Scoop, un giornale londinese che Elias aveva contattato durante la sua permanenza nella città. Ricevono anche una visita da Carlton Ramsey, che si occupa di preparare il loro viaggio a Londra. Questi li informa che il figlio di Emilia, Hans, vive a Londra, ed è interessato a conoscerli.

Usciti dall' ospedale, Frank e George decidono di tornare a casa di Robert, per dare conforto alla governante, Lucy. Lucy consegna loro un referto medico relativo a Roger Carlyle che Robert aveva richiesto prima degli eventi alla Ju-Ju House. Durante la loro permanenza a casa di Robert, gli investigatori analizzano con più cura gli oggetti recuperati nella Ju-Ju House. Uno di questi, una strana maschera con quattro volti, sembra affascinare George. Quando questi indossa la maschera, la sua sanità viene devastata da immagini mostruose. George sviluppa una fobia, ma riesce a non cadere nel baratro della follia.

George decide di trasferirsi in un albergo, mentre Frank rimane con Lucy nella residenza di Robert. Durante una notte di luna nuova, Mukunga M'Dari si presenta alla casa, e prova a prendere Frank di sorpresa. L' investigatore riesce a sparargli ben tre volte, ma sempre di striscio, mentre il cultista avanza inesorabile, e assale Frank facendo uso di magia nera. Messo alle strette, Frank recupera la granata che Robert si era procurato per far saltare in aria la Ju-Ju House, e la usa contro Mukunga. Il sacerdote della Lingua Insanguinata perde la vita durante l' esplosione.

Ritenendo che i loro affari a New York si siano conclusi, Frank e George si imbarcano per l' Inghilterra. Approdano a Southampton, e prendono un treno per recarsi a Londra. E' il 10 Marzo del 1925, quando si incontrano per la prima volta con il giovane Hans, e la sua ancor più giovane amica Wang, una scaricatrice di porto con una pericolosa curiosità per l' occulto.

Mask of Hayama

A carved wooden African mask with four hideous faces perched atop a thick, corded neck with a basket-like reed, feather, and fabric collar that hides the wearer’s face. No straps, ties, or handles hold this unsightly mask to the face. As soon as the mask is placed on the head, the collar constricts around the face, holding it tightly in position, its agonized grimace clear to all onlookers. The wearer cannot remove the mask, and neither can anyone else pull it free.

As the mask stays on, the wearer ceases to struggle. After 15 seconds, the wearer’s pupils expand to fill their eye sockets, unseen by those watching. At that point, and for the following 30 seconds, the wearer has an all-too-clear vision of one of four gods, chosen at random by rolling 1D4 and consulting Table: Mask of Hayama Visions, unless a specific Call or Contact spell is used at the same time (see following); the wearer must make a Sanity roll to determine their fate. The mask then releases its grip on the wearer’s face and can be removed. If used in conjunction with a Call or Contact spell for one of these gods, as described below, the mask also releases itself when the spell concludes.

There are benefits to wearing the mask, if the wearer survives with their Sanity intact. The first time each god is viewed through the mask, increase the wearer’s Cthulhu Mythos by 1D10 points, in addition to any Cthulhu Mythos gain due to insanity. Secondly, donning the mask while casting any of the spells Contact Nodens, Call Azathoth, Call Shub-Niggurath, or Call Yog-Sothoth effectively opens a more direct line to that god. In game terms, this adds a bonus die to the roll for the spell being cast for the first time. The Mask of Hayama is a prized Mythos artifact and cultists will kill for it.

Ju-Ju House

 

Mukunga M’Dari, 38, high priest of the Bloody Tongue

Description: a tall, muscular African man with a shaved head. M’Dari wears a perpetual scowl, as if the world around him is a constant source of disappointment. He only smiles when inflicting pain or fear. His clothes are plain and inexpensive, although well maintained.

Traits: enjoys hurting people. He is happy to toy with investigators like a cat playing with a mouse, relishing their fear and suffering.

Death (session 21): Frank threw a hand grenade at him.

Sessione 20

22 Gennaio 1925, New York

Emilia guarda nel pozzo, dove una creatura da incubo urla e si lamenta in preda al dolore a la follia. Una massa di volti racchiusi in una sorta di carne gelatinosa la implora di nutrirla. La sanità della donna cede, ed Emilia si ritrova in stato catatonico ad osservare l' orrore ululante, pericolosamente vicina al bordo della fossa.

Frank consegna George alle cure di Robert, e ritorna nello scantinato per recuperare Emilia. Il detective si assicura di non guardare nella fossa, e usa l' argano per sigillare di nuovo la prigione della mostruosità. Poi insieme si dirigono verso le scale.

Fuori dal negozio, Needham sta combattendo contro un cultista della Lingua Insanguinata, mentre Jackie giace morto in terra, con un cultista che continua a pugnalarlo. Frank uccide uno dei cultisti, e Needham si occupa dell' altro.

Il gruppo nota un furgoncino parcheggiato poco lontano, e decidono di prenderlo per fuggire. Recuperano Douglas e Art dall' altro lato del negozio, e si preparano ad abbandonare il luogo. 

Ma Robert ha un ripensamento: temendo che Silas possa incriminarli quando si risveglierà, decide di giustiziare l' uomo ancora privo di sensi con un colpo di pistola alla testa. Questo atto truculento gli fa perdere il controllo, e il dottore sviluppa una temporanea fobia per le persone di colore. I compagni di Hilton sono disgustati dalle azioni del dottore, e decidono di prendere il furgone e andare via. 

Frank prova a fermarli, aggrappandosi ad uno sportello mentre il camioncino corre a tutta velocità per le strade di Harlem. Needham perde il controllo della vettura e si va a schiantare. I compagni di Hilton muoiono nell' incidente, mentre Frank è ferito gravemente. Nella distanza, robert si accorge dell' incidente, e si affretta a soccorrere il compagno. Miracolosamente, riesce a salvarlo.

Mentre sono li' per strada e disperati, Ferdinand, che li stava cercando, arriva e li soccorre. Prende in macchina George, Robert, e Frank, e li porta in ospedale. Soltanto in un secondo momento si accorgono della mancanza di Emilia.

Nel frattempo Emilia ha deciso di rimanere nella Ju-Ju House, e pondera sul dare fuoco al negozio, per eliminare ogni traccia. Trova una bombola di kerosene, e innaffia il cadavare di Silas con la sostanza. Mentre cerca un fiammifero, si accorge della figura di Mukunga M'Dari che si staglia contro l' uscio della porta, pugnale alla mano. Emilia gli spara, ma manca il bersaglio. Mukunga le si scaglia contro, e con un unico fendente della sua lama la decapita.

New York, conseguenze

Quando la polizia si reca alla Ju-Ju House, non trovano nulla di incriminante. 

Fortunatamente, tutte le prove necessarie per incriminare Silas e il Culto sono in una scatola di ferro che gli investigatori avevano recuperato nel seminterrato. Grazie alle capacità del loro avvocato Carlton Ramsey, e del supporto della stampa tramite Rebecca Shosenburg, gli investigatori vengono scagionati da varie imputazioni.

Il Culto della Lingua Insanguinata è stato smantellato, ma il suo alto sacerdote è ancora a piede libero.

Ferdinand si addentra nei misteri occulti del tomo in suo possesso.

Frank e George dovranno rimanere in ospedale per alcune settimane, ma sopravviveranno.

Robert, che ha ucciso a sangue freddo una persona priva di sensi, viene condannato alla pena di morte (tiro di Law 80% fallito, pushed, e fallito di nuovo!), e trasferito a Sing Sing*.

Il cadavere di Emilia non viene ritrovato.

Africa’s Dark Sects

Written by explorer Nigel Blackwell during his travels across Africa, the book is an odd mix of travelogue and exposé of the ritual practices of a variety of African cults. Although the notes of his travels were obviously turned into a book, no publisher is listed on the title page, and Blackwell is impossible to track down. Some believe the book may have been written under a pseudonym, but there are no candidates as to the real author if that is the case. Only 13 copies are known to exist—the authorities managed to burn the rest.

Supposedly copied by du Nord from an earlier Greek manuscript. Only 13 specimens, partial or complete, are now known to exist. Although the original manuscript on which du Nord based his work may have come to the Averoigne region directly from Atlantis, it has been conjectured that, purely by chance, it made its way to France via ancient Egypt.

Amongst the Stones

English, by Justin Geoffrey, 1918. Handwritten, containing poems later found in People of the Monolith (pub. 1926), bound in the skin of a hunting horror.

Although several of the verses contained within this slim volume are identical to those which appear in Geoffrey’s later published work, some are earlier versions which see heavy revision prior to their official publication by Erebus Press, Monmouth, Illinois. Others are unique to this manuscript.

Sessione 19

22 Gennaio 1925, New York

George spende la giornata immerso nei libri rubati dalla residenza Carlyle, cadendo sempre più a fondo nel baratro di conoscenze occulte. In mattinata, gli altri si recano a Sing Sing per parlare con Hilton Adams. L' uomo non ha nuovi indizi per gli investigatori, ma sembra confermare tutto cio' che hanno scoperto fino ad ora, soprattutto l' importanza della Ju-Ju House come luogo di ritrovo dei cultisti della Lingua Insanguinata.

Nel pomeriggio Frank fa visita a Mordecai Lemming, un esperto di occultismo, ma è chiaro da subito che l' uomo non ha niente di interessante da offrire. Robert decide di approcciare i suoi contatti militari per procurarsi una granata (!).

Giunta la sera, gli investigatori decidono di recarsi alla Ju-Ju House, per svelare una volta per tutte i segreti che vi si nascondono. Si incontrano prima con degli amici di Hilton (Art Mills, Douglas Fells, Jackie Wallace, Needham Johnson), e li convincono ad andare con loro per porre fine ai delitti del culto.

Mentre gli amici di Hilton fanno da guardia su entrambi i lati del negozio, George prova a scassinare la porta sul retro, ma senza successo. Quando Silas viene svegliato dal rumore provocato ed esce a controllare, George lo assale. Dopo una breve lotta l' anziano uomo viene sottomesso. Gli altri investigatori giungono sulla scena, Robert rimane al piano superiore, mentre Emilia, Frank e George scendono nei sotterranei.

Si ritrovano in una vasta stanza, tutte le superfici sono in pietra lavorata. Torce in nicchie murarie illuminano la sala. Una tenda protegge una piccola alcova di fronte alla porta. Tamburi africani rivestono le pareti. A un'estremità della stanza c'è una fossa, di circa 2,5 m di diametro, coperta da uno spesso blocco di pietra. Un grande argano è posizionato per solloevare il blocco.

Quando George va a controllare l' alcova, si trova dinanzi a quattro cadaveri, che si muovono per assalirlo. Uno di essi è Millie Adams. Emilia e Frank si fanno avanti per assistere George, e riescono a neutralizare i quattro morti viventi. Durante lo scontro, George è ferito gravemente, ma Emilia riesce a fasciare la ferita quanto basta per tenerlo in vita. Frank e George decidono di lasciare i sotterranei, portando via una serie di oggetti (*) trovati nell' alcova. Emilia, incuriosita dalla fossa, rimuove il blocco di pietra con l' aiuto dell' argano.

Jackie Wallace, 30, hospital orderly

Description: stronger than he looks. He prefers to wear a pullover and bow tie rather than a full three-piece suit, and keeps his hair quite short and well oiled. He has a reassuring smile.

Traits: calm, caring, and observant, Wallace has good instincts when it comes to judging people and knowing how to take care of them.

Death (session 20): Killed by a cultist of the Bloody Tongue.

Douglas Fells, age 31, sculptor

Description: a physically robust African-American man, with large, dextrous hands and an unwavering gaze. He shambles about in threadbare old suits, usually smeared with clay and slip, his hair unkempt and a day or so’s stubble darkening his face.

Traits: once the life and soul of the party, he is now quiet and introspective. Pvt. Fells also has a keen eye for detail, one of the things that made him an excellent marksman (something he has still to reconcile himself with). He is undoubtedly suffering from shell shock as a result of his wartime experiences.

Death (session 20): Killed in a car accident.

Needham Johnson, 30, reporter at the New York Age

Description: a handsome, clean-shaven African-American man of average height and build, Johnson keeps his thick hair slicked back in waves. He is rarely seen out of a wellcared-for pinstriped suit.

Traits: world-weary and cynical, Johnson feels frustrated that he cannot help his friend, which can manifest in outbursts of extreme anger, especially if he’s been drinking.

Death (session 20): Killed in a car accident.

Hilton Adams, 29, an innocent man

Description: an African-American man, with strong features and a muscular build, although he appears to have lost weight while in prison. He wears a black-and-white striped denim prisoner’s uniform. His short, dark hair is lightly peppered with gray, despite his youth, and his face is creased with lines.

Traits: has seen how the law operates in Harlem all his life, and while he has not lost hope, he is realistic about his chances. As a result, he is stoic in his dealings with those who would help him, not dismissing their offers, but remaining politely skeptical.

Dr. Mordecai Lemming, 62, eccentric and wealthy folklorist

Description: small, balding, and pale, his clothes are typical of an absent-minded academic, covered in ink and dust with grubby cuffs and various odd-looking stains.

Traits: garrulous and often fascinating to listen to, it is clear that he loves his subject, even if he is somewhat squeamish about its darker aspects and woefully naive about some of his contacts in New York.

The Pnakotic Manuscripts

English, author and translator unknown, 15th century.Quarto, embossed red leather binding of a later date than the contained manuscript.

Five bound manuscript versions (partial copies of a greater work, now lost) of this book are catalogued in Europe and America, at least one of which resides at Miskatonic University; another is rumored to be held by the New York Public Library. The precursor volume, the Pnakotica, was written in classical Greek, and contained stories of Hyperborea, Atlantis, and Jupiter. That book may trace its origins to the pre-human crinoids who seeded life on Earth.

Life as a God

English, by MontgomeryCrompton, c.1810. Duodecimo, handwritten, bound in human skin.

The only copy of a diary by English artist Crompton, who came to Egypt in 1805 and became a minor priest of the Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh. Crompton was insane by the time he wrote this diary, meaning that much of it is incoherent.

Bradley Grey, 41, counselor to Erica Carlyle

Description: a slender, slightly foppish white man with dark, wavy hair that is graying at the temples. A brilliantly white smile, his otherwise fine features are marred by worry lines around his eyes and mouth.

Traits: projects a professional manner and urbane charm, which sometimes strays into over-familiarity. He often touches people on the arm or knee while talking to them, although not in a solicitous manner. This superficial charm evaporates when he is frightened, leaving him flustered; when this happens, he reddens visibly and develops a slight stammer.
