14 Gennaio 1926 - Il Grande Rituale

Gli investigatori, supportati da Jack Brady e i ribelli di Nuova Cina, formano delle squadre d' assalto per fermare il Grande Rituale. durante la notte, 

Col favore dell'oscurità, arrivano alla spiaggia sabbiosa di Grey Dragon Island. Furtivamente, il gruppo  uccide uno degli strani uomini-pesce ed entra nella sua capanna. Non trovano nulla di utile, ma da quella posizione riescono a sorvegliare la spiaggia e il vulcano.

Molti cultisti sono riuniti sulla sabbia, cantando ed eseguendo raccapriccianti rituali. Gli investigatori individuano un sentiero che porta dalla spiaggia al fianco del vulcano; alla fine del percorso, vedono un ingresso.

I PG si lasciano dietro le loro armi pesanti e si fanno strada all'interno del vulcano; i cultisti sono troppi e troppo presi dalla loro frenesia per accorgersene.

All'interno del vulcano, i PG sono testimoni dell'obiettivo principale del Grande Rituale: un razzo è stato costruito sopra una pozza di magma, raccogliendo energia dai rituali oscuri e dai materiali osceni usati nella sua costruzione. Quando il razzo sarà lanciato nello spazio, la potenza della sua esplosione, amplificata dal Grande Rituale e dall'eclissi solare, aprirà la strada agli Antichi.

Non c'è tempo da perdere; i PG mettono in atto un diversivo per creare il caos ed esplorare la caverna. Trovano Hans, ora anche lui un cultista di Nyarlathotep, in un'officina, che maneggia una testata nucleare aliena che sarà l'ultimo pezzo del razzo. Danno ad Hans ciò che gli è dovuto e rubano la testata, al sicuro (presumibilmente) all'interno di un contenitore di metallo.

Gli investigatori meditano su un piano in cui possono interrompere il rituale e salvarsi comunque la vita, ma quando Sir Aubrey e Ho Fang vengono avvisati della loro presenza, la situazione degenera rapidamente.

Con i suoi compagni e Jack Brady che cadono uno dopo l'altro nelle mani dei cultisti, Gioacchino non vede altro modo che mettere in atto l'estremo sacrificio. Tenendo la testata tra le braccia, si getta nella fossa del magma. Pochi minuti dopo, la testata esplode, obliterando l'intera isola. Il fungo nucleare si alza nel cielo, deridendo gli Antichi e sconvolgendo i loro piani per sempre.

In tutto il mondo, i cultisti di Nyarlathotep devono affrontare la consapevolezza che tutti i loro sforzi sono stati vani. Il mondo è salvo.

Gray Dragon Island

 

Sir Aubrey Penhew, appears 55, peer of the realm and callous sorcerer

Tall and distinguished, with a long face, prominent chin and nose, and thick, bushy eyebrows. His thick, brown hair is peppered with gray.

Traits: implacable and insane.

Sessione 45

Gennaio 1926

Elizabeth, Henri, Gioacchino e Samuel sono ancora sulla Luxuriant Goddess, lo yacht di Ho Fang. Non essendo in grado di pilotare il natante, decidono di contattare i membri di New China per venire a recuperare lo yacht. Si dirigono poi verso lo yacht do Sir Aubrey, la Dark Mistress. 

Li' tendono un agguato alla ciurma e al capitano, uccidendoli tutti. Nella sala macchine dello yacht trovano una strana pietra verde e radioattiva, infatti un frammento di meteorite. Purtroppo quando stanno per abbandonare lo yacht vengono intercettati dalla polizia, e arrestati per accertamenti.

Wen-Cheng, Eugene, David e Hilton tengono d' occhio Ho Fang e Carl Stanford per trovare il modo migliore di assalirli. Sorvegliano il magazzino di Ho Fang, ma alla fine decidono di intrufolarsi durante la notte nella residenza di Ho Fang, con l' intento di trovare Choi Mei-Ling, e assassinare Ho Fang.

I loro piani vengono duramente interrotti quando si trovano dinanzi la stanza di Carl Stanford e decidono di affrontarlo. Provano a tendergli un agguato, ma il potente stregone prima mette fuori gioco Hilton con una maledizione che lo rende incapace di agire, e poi fa avvizzire il braccio destro di David. Disperato, Wen-Cheng prova ad obliterare Stanford con un candelotto di dinamite, ma l' esplosione coinvolge lo sfortunato studente, David, e Eugene. Hilton, che era rimasto duori dalla stanza, si salva miracolosamente, ma il suo fato è incerto. 

Ho Fang's Mansion

 

Ho Fang, 57, high priest and wealthy merchant

Under his camouflage of a successful businessman, Ho Fang’s tentacles of terror reach around the globe, as the investigators are no doubt aware. Ho’s public reputation, though, is spotless and ultra-respectable. He deliberately accepts gratitude money and cheats a bit on his taxes, subscriptions, and contributions so that his peers do not think him a fool.

Description: short, fat, and apparently amiable. He wears a baggy white linen suit and smokes aromatic, dark-wrapped cigarettes.

Traits: devious and dangerous.

Ho Fang's Warehouse

 

Carl Stanford, appears 47, immortal sorcerer and fanatic

Mighty Cthulhu sent Stanford as an intermediary to acquire the Seven Cryptical Books of Hsan from their owner, Lin Yenyu; however, before Stanford even arrived in Shanghai, Jack Brady stole the tome for himself. Now Stanford pursues both the scroll and Jack Brady. He intends to extract the missing thief ’s whereabouts from Brady’s girlfriend, Choi Mei-ling.

Description: apparently middle-aged, bespectacled, and clean-shaven with receding hair.

Traits: ruthless, sadistic, and arrogant.

Death (Session 45): Li Wen-Chang detonated a dynamite stick in Stanford's bedroom, killing himself, two of his companions, and the sorcerer.

The Seven Cryptical Scroll of Hsan

Classical Chinese, written by Hsan the Greater, c. 2nd century. A single, large classical Chinese scroll organized into seven books, handwritten and kept in a fitted scroll case bearing the Elder Sign.

This particular copy of the Seven Cryptical Books is much more ancient and perfect than the usual copies. Disagreement still exists as to whether the book was written by Hsan the Greater, or was in fact brought from Leng at the time of the Yellow Emperor before being translated. Amongst other topics, the Books discuss Nyarlathotep’s many incarnations and the Dreamlands, as well as containing fragments from other Mythos tomes.

Sessione 44

29 Dicembre 1925

Jack Brady racconta agli investigatori quello che sa della spedizione Carlyle. Il suo scopo ora è di fermare Sir Aubrey e il culto della Donna Gonfia, che stanno mettendo a punto un Grande Rituale sull' isola del Drago Grigio. Questo è anche il motivo per il quale ha rubato i Sette Libri Criptici di Hsan; nelle antiche pergamene è contenuto un rituale che potrà sigillare nuovamente i luoghi profanati dall' influenza di Nyarlathotep. Gli investigatori decidono di fidarsi di Brady, e formano un' alleanza.    

Gennaio 1926

Mu Hsien si dedica alla traduzione delle pergamene, che richiederà almeno un' altra settimana. Nel frattempo gli investigatori si preparano insieme con Brady all' assalto all' isola del Drago Grigio. Brady li introduce a Chu Min, leader dei ribelli della Nuova Cina. Gli investigatori con un passato militare addestrano i ribelli come meglio possono.

Gli investigatori contattano Isoge Taro, Capitano della Marina Giapponese, e lo informano di un' arma segreta che il culto sta costruendo sull isola del Drago Grigio. Isoge sembra preoccupato dalla notizia.

I PG tengono d' occhio il porto. Notano lo yacht di Sir Aubrey, che sembra essere presidiato da strani individui con dei tratti simili a pesci. Decidono di evitare questa imbarcazione, e invece si intrufolano sullo yacht di Ho Fang. Dopo aver eliminato alcune guardie, investigano la stiva e le altre stanze dello yacht, ma non trovano nulla di compromettente.

Un' ulteriore sorveglianza nei dintorni della villa di Ho Fang rivela che un pericoloso cultista, Carl Stanford, sta alloggiando presso il sommo sacerdote. Pare altresi' che i due cultisti abbiano catturato la compagna di Jack Brady, Choi Mei-Ling, e la tengano prigioniera per scoprire l' ubicazione dell' uomo.

Chu Min, 31, leader of New China

A member of the violent revolutionary organization New China, and leader of its paramilitary Firm Action wing, Chu maintains a cover identity as a warehouseman but, in reality, is solely on the Firm Action payroll.

Description: stocky and powerfully built, with a thick shock of jet-black hair (usually hidden under a worker’s cap).

Traits: fierce, argumentative, brave, and loyal to any cause he believes in.

Mu Hsien's House

 

Jack Brady, 41, last sane member of the Carlyle Expedition

Having hoped that his involvement with the Carlyle Expedition was at an end after the reported deaths of all concerned, Jack Brady received a nasty surprise when he spotted Sir Aubrey Penhew alive and well aboard the Dark Mistress in Shanghai.

The sighting reinvigorated Brady’s plan to secure the sites Roger Carlyle told him were essential for the Great Gate’s opening during his last days of lucidity

Description: tall, tanned, and muscled, with a high forehead and short brown hair, graying at the temples. There is a hunted look in his eyes.

Traits: violent, instinctual, and more than a little bit paranoid (not without reason).

Mu Hsien, 63, scholar

Mu has seen many changes in his lifetime, and has learned to observe carefully before speaking. He is an old man, and certainly not up to fighting mad cultists and monsters. Yet he is so shocked by what Brady has taught him that he cannot turn his back and could prove to be a valuable ally if the investigators convince him of their trustworthiness.

Description: short with a shaven head, he retains his robes even though he has abandoned his queue (the traditional ponytail worn by Chinese scholars and officials during the Imperial period). 

Traits: watchful and reserved

Lin Yenyu, 65, wealthy aesthete and madam

Madam Lin is a powerful woman. Although her family was poor, she worked her way up through her profession (prostitution), determined to lift herself and her family out of poverty. Along the way, she found that she had a skill for encouraging people to share their secrets; a talent which also helped her meteoric rise through the ranks to become a famous courtesan and then, Madam, with high-class flower girl houses in each of the major treaty ports, as well as the capital, Peking.

Description: slightly taller than the average Chinese woman, with a good figure for a lady of her age. Her dark hair is elaborately styled, and she dresses in traditional clothing. She always wears a jade brooch of a swallow (a play on the literal translation of her name “swallow jade”).

Traits: cunning, intelligent, determined.

Sessione 43

27 Dicembre 1925

Gli investigatori fanno visita alla Casa del Calmo Riposo, dove si incontrano con Lin Yenyu, anche conosciuta come Dama Rondine. La donna è un' esperta di occultismo, e collezionista di oggetti mistici. Lin rivela di conoscere Jack Brady, ma di non essere in buoni rapporti con l' uomo. Jack ha rubato un reperto di grande valore dalla collezione di Lin, i Sette Libri Criptici di Hsan. Lin vuole recuperare i libri, e offre il suo supporto se i PG riusciranno a trovarli.

28 Dicembre 1925

Gli investigatori fanno visita al museo di Shanghai, dove parlano con l' assistente del curatore. Riescono ad ottenere una lista contenente i nome dei maggiori esperti di occultismo della zona. Tra di essi, Lin Yenyu, che hanno già intervistato, e due altri accademici: Mr Chang Ning e Mr. Mu Hsien.

I PG fanno visita a Chang Ning; l' uomo è esperto di occultismo, ma non sembra avere nessuna informazione aggiuntivache possa aiutare gli investigatori.

29 Dicembre 1925

Gli investigatori si recano alla casa di Mu Hsien. Mr Mu è un uomo severo e burbero, ma molto interessato alle vicende che circondano i PG. Dopo averli intervistati a dovere, e essersi assicurato delle loro intenzioni, Mu Hsien fa cenno ad un altro ospite di rivelare la sua presenza.

La porta dello studio si apre, e sull' uscio appare Jack Brady, guardia del corpo e miglior amico di Roger Carlyle.

Shanghai Courier's Articles

 

Anthony Chang (Chang Pao), 24, inexperienced editor and spy

Chang has recently returned to Shanghai from Britain and has taken on the Shanghai Courier at his wealthy father’s behest in order to revive the newspaper’s flagging fortunes. Well, that’s the official story, at least. A graduate of Oxford University recruited to the British Secret Service, Chang keeps a discreet eye on Shanghai’s expat community and those they do business with. He is a reporter and editor of sorts, having worked on a variety of student newspapers during his undergraduate days. He is very young and inexperienced, both as a journalist and as a spy.

Description: smartly dressed in Western-style clothing, with neat, slicked-back hair and an inquiring gaze.

Traits: curious, intelligent, polite.
